Bishop Thomas K. Gorman

Bishop Thomas K. Gorman is a private Catholic high school in Tyler, Texas. Located on 30 acres (120,000 m2) in south Tyler, the campus features a main classroom building, two gyms, a fine arts center, McCallum Stadium, the renovated Holy Family Library, as well as numerous sports fields. It is ranked as a Top 50 Catholic High School in 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010, and 2010-2012. The mission of the Tyler Catholic School System is the fulfillment of the educational ministry of the Catholic Church and has as its primary goal the ongoing formation of the Christian person. It aims at the development of the individual’s moral, intellectual, social, cultural and physical endowments.

BEAM (Berkeley Engineers and Mentors)

The purpose of BEAM is to ensure students of all socioeconomic backgrounds a long-term commitment to engaging science and engineering activities which stimulate their interest in pursuing careers in STEM. UC Berkeley students volunteer their time mentoring younger students, learning about science education, and building relationships with their mentees.

Cristo Rey Richmond

Cristo Rey Richmond is home to the Cristo Rey Richmond High School, Inc. and the Cristo Rey Richmond Corporate Work Study Program, Inc. Cristo Rey Richmond High School is a Catholic learning community that educates young people of limited economic means to become men and women of faith, purpose and service. Through a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, integrated with a relevant work study experience, students graduate ready to succeed in college and in life. Cristo Rey Richmond is sponsored religiously by Bon Secours Ministries. Cristo Rey Richmond High School is a part of the largest network of high schools in the country that exclusively serve low-income youth. As a part of the Cristo Rey Network, Cristo Rey schools adhere to a set of Mission Effectiveness Standards to protect the integrity of the model and articulate the shared mission.

ByteWorks

ByteWorks is dedicated to advancing computer literacy to primarily at-risk and/or low-income children between the ages of 9 and 15 years old. The children participate in a series of six classes, and are introduced to a range of computing topics including internet safety, word processing, and even programming. Conducted by volunteers, the classes are held in ByteWorks’ classroom facility located at 4100 Shenandoah. Upon successful completion of the free six-week course, the student takes home a complete desktop computer system. We call this course our Earn-A-Computer program. The computers given to the students are donated by companies and individuals in the St. Louis area. Each system is refurbished at ByteWorks. We are an all volunteer organization. Our dedicated volunteers are responsible for refurbishing computers, marketing our programs, teaching classes, administration, IT infrastructure… The list goes on. Whatever needs to be done is done by a volunteer. ByteWorks encourages the youth to remain involved with the organization after a computer has been earned. There are opportunities to earn upgraded equipment, advance within the program, and obtain leadership roles. Funding for the program comes from donations and grants.
