Profile
Louis de Koker is a Professor of Law at La Trobe Law School and a member of the La Trobe LawTech research group at the Law School.
Prior to taking up this position, held a chair of law at Deakin University and was the founding director of the Centre for the Study of Economic Crime (CenSEC) and a Professor of Mercantile Law at the University of Johannesburg. From 2014-2019 he was the program lead: Law and Policy of the Australian government-funded Data to Decisions Cooperative Research Centre (D2D CRC).
His research focuses on financial profiling data and on managing the relationship between financial inclusion and anti-money laundering and counter terrorist financing objectives, especially in relation to Fintech. He has undertaken various Deakin University research engagements with the bodies such as the World Bank and AusAID and has worked closely with the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) and with the Financial Integrity Working Group of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI). This work extended to a range of developing countries including Ghana, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Namibia, Nigeria, Uganda, the Ukraine and Palau. His publications have been cited in publications and research papers of international bodies such as the World Bank, the IMF, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, the International Labour Organisation, the G20’s Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion and the World Economic Forum.
Louis is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
