I've been a software engineer since 2007, and a manager since 2015. I'm an engineering leader who is driven, self-motivated, and pushes himself and his team to become better through introspection and continual reinvention. I've had to learn that I'm not always going to be the smartest person in the room, and that's okay. I've made it my personal goal to put the right people in the right positions, engineers and managers alike, so that together we can tackle the problems that arise. I'm open to being wrong, and adapting my approach to a problem. I have a bias toward action. I move fast and break stuff. Because of this I've ensured my QA team is a first-class citizen on the engineering team, not an afterthought. The QA team is empowered to veto or delay releases to ensure they are comfortable with the state of the work to be released. As director I give my project leads the goals we need to accomplish, and the autonomy to do so as they see fit. I roll up my sleeves and jump in where necessary to ensure they remain unblocked and on track. I get tremendous satisfaction from watching my people learn and grow, and playing a part in that growth. Gaining their trust (or, sometimes, regaining it because I'm not perfect) is very gradual, but incredibly rewarding to finally cultivate. I derive the most pride from seeing somebody rise to the occasion where they previously wouldn't have, and even more so from being able to promote them for the progress they've made, the responsibility they've taken on, and the leadership they've exhibited.
