If your organization is focused its DEI goals and measurements only on the "D", you are missing out on some invaluable information, you are more likely to cause backlash, and you are probably struggling to achieve your DEI objectives.
I am on a mission to get people to start measuring inclusion and equity. Several companies now say the measure inclusion, belonging or equity, but the invariably focus on surveys to explore "feelings of inclusion, belonging or equity." But it's important to go beyond feelings, because knowing that someone feels less included doesn't tell you why or how to fix it. Measuring inclusion and equity gives you tangible, actionable way to drive real change that will, ultimately, also create and sustain greater inclusion.
Building on more than three decades of interdisciplinary research, teaching, entrepreneurship, consulting, public speaking and writing, since late 2015 I have focused all my energy on changing the way people think about Diversity & Inclusion, and what they do about it. I particularly enjoy taking advantage of my privilege to communicate effectively with (predominantly white and male) corporate leaders who may want to do something about DEI but struggle balancing their corporate responsibilities with their desire to "do the right thing." I love explaining why these two goals are actually aligned with one another, and how to leverage DEI to create a stronger organization with happier employees and superior results.
